Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major health problem worldwide, and early stage diagnosis is associated with improved survival. A substantial proportion of patients present with stage II CRC. However, there is little information on the value of biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis of CRC. Our aim was to assess the use of currently available preoperative biomarkers in CRC stage assessment and to establish whether their accuracy is improved with preoperative serum samples as compared to postoperative tissue samples. Data from 839 surgically resected patients with CRC who had preoperative samples available were reviewed, and the clinicopathologic parameters and preoperative biomarker levels were recorded. The preoperative samples were compared to corresponding matched postoperative tissue samples for the preoperative biomarker. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used to test the relationship between each biomarker and pre-existing clinicopathologic variables. Stage was correctly predicted in 66.0% of all patients. Of the preoperative biomarkers tested, CEA had the highest preoperative sensitivity and Dukes' classification had the highest positive predictive value (P=0.001). Combining CEA and Dukes' staging correctly predicted disease stage in 94.7% of patients. Achieving a correct prediction of stage by using CEA and Dukes' staging had a significant impact on the accuracy of disease stage diagnosis in early CRC. Dukes' staging increased the predictive value of CEA in correctly identifying the stage of CRC. In conclusion, a preoperative serum CEA and Dukes' staging in addition to the standard postoperative histopathologic examinations can be used to improve the assessment of early stage CRC.Prevention of the nigrostriatal dopamine denervation produced by pre- and postnatal injections of 6-hydroxydopamine in rats. The effect of pre- and postnatal injections of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) on the nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) neurones was studied in young and adult rats. 55cdc1ed1c
